Key components and steps involved in a typical conveyor sorting line

Apr 22, 2025

A conveyor sorting line in an automatic warehouse refers to a system of conveyors and sorting mechanisms used to efficiently sort and distribute items within the warehouse. This system is commonly implemented in conjunction with automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) or other types of material handling systems.

The conveyor sorting line typically consists of a series of interconnected conveyors that transport items from one location to another. These conveyors may be equipped with sensors, diverters, and other mechanisms to facilitate the sorting process. Here are the key components and steps involved in a typical conveyor sorting line:

1. Infeed: Items or products are loaded onto the conveyor system, usually from a central feeding point or from other parts of the warehouse.

2. Scanning and identification: Optical scanners or barcode readers are employed to identify and capture information about the items, such as SKU numbers or relevant product details. This information is used for subsequent sorting and routing decisions.

3. Sorting: After the items are scanned, they are directed to specific sorting destinations based on predetermined criteria. For instance, a diverting mechanism, such as a tilt tray, pusher, or pop-up wheel, can direct the items to the appropriate output chute or conveyor line based on their attributes or destination.

4. Routing and merging: Depending on the configuration and requirements of the warehouse, the sorted items may need to be merged with other conveyor lines or flow paths to reach their final destinations. This may involve merge conveyors or merge systems that allow for the smooth and controlled merging of multiple streams of items.

5. Packaging or further processing: Once the items reach their designated sorting destination, they can be routed for packing, labeling, additional processing, or shipping.

6. Feedback and control: Throughout the sorting process, the WCS or central control system monitors the flow of items, tracks their status, and ensures that they are properly sorted and directed to the correct locations. The WCS also manages the overall efficiency, throughput, and coordination of the conveyor sorting line.

Overall, the conveyor sorting line in an automatic warehouse enhances the efficiency and accuracy of order fulfillment by automating the process of sorting and routing items. It reduces manual intervention, minimizes errors, and improves the overall productivity of the warehouse operation.
